WELCOME!   Laughing

Thank you for visiting our parrot rescue site!  A-Parrot to A-Flamingo Rescue  is  always looking for good homes for birds coming into our Organization.  Please understand that we would like to get to know our potential adopters and their birds first, and we are sure you would like to find out more about our parrot rescue organization.

Our rescue organization does have adoption requirements for adopting birds, particularly parrots, as the birds we get in most probably will be older and may not have "perfect" personalities, etc.   If you wish to adopt a  Cockatiel or a smaller common species of bird our requirements are not as strict.

See the sidebar to your left for other pages of interest on this site also.

 Who we Are

A-Parrot to A-Flamingo Rescue is registered in the State of Ohio as a non-profit, PARROT ADOPTION,  PARROT RESCUE, PET CAGE BIRD RESCUE, BIRD ADOPTION, PARROT RE-HOMING  ORGANIZATION.

Our rescue birds are temporarily fostered in private homes with current parrot owners prior to placement.  Our organization does not warehouse birds in outside buildings or garages with little or no contact or attention.  We believe parrots are flock animals and enjoy the company of other birds to simulate being in the wild.

A-Parrot is also registered as a "No Kill"  animal rescue organization.

We accept small and large pet birds and parrots and adopt them out to the best home we can find.

Our staff has over 20 years of experience in helping the Bird Placement Program*  (now closed as of June 2007).   You will note that our  two organizations' policies are pretty much identical.  A-Parrot to A-Flamingo, Inc., Parrot Rescue is now a separate organization.

A-Parrot to A-Flamingo Rescue does not transfer out  birds for a fast profit.  Our organization takes its time to locate just the right home for each and every bird in our possession.  It may take A-Parrot to A-Flamingo Rescue a little while to find just the right home for our rescue birds. A-Parrot to A-Flamingo Rescue puts the welfare of our rescues FIRST -- because we CARE about them.

Parrot/Bird Species We Accept into our Organization

Parrots (greys, cockatoos, amazons, eclectus, etc.), conures, ringneck parrots, other parakeets, cockatiels, budgies, finches, canaries, etc.

Healthy, tame, handleable, young or older, not tame, those with certain personality "quirks", nippy are OK too.  We will place all of these birds.

Flamingos?  We take in the pink plastic garden species of flamingo only!    Laughing

..............

Species we do NOT take in:

Wild or outside birds, farm birds, swans, peacocks, toucans, lorys, doves, or pigeons.

Attention Potential Adopters:

Info about A-Parrot's Adoption Process

(1)  It is important that you read all of our web pages on this site BEFORE you email us.

(2) This site will answer a lot of questions you may have about A-Parrot's adoption process and qualifications to adopt.

(3)  Our adoption qualifications apply to all applicants.

(4)  After reading the info here, the next step for a potential adopter is to email us and request a pre-determination email interview so that we can get to know you.

(5) Specific questions about donations for adopting a bird from A-Parrot are answered in the potential Adopter's third (last) pre-determination email.

(6)  Please understand that every bird rescue organization will have its own adoption qualifications and policies to follow.  You may feel free to check us all out.  A-Parrot is not associated with any other organization, and our Adopters must agree to our  policies in order to be considered as an applicant to adopt a bird from us.  Laughing

How Many Birds do we Have?

It varies, as birds come in and go out all the time.  We only accept the number of birds that can properly be cared for prior to placement.

Do We Ship Birds, or Allow Visits?

A-Parrot does NOT ship birds.  We are not set up for "visiting" prior to an application being approved by our Board of  Directors as birds are fostered here in private homes.   Appointments are made after we have your appoved application in our files.  Info and pictures of current birds available for adoption are noted on Petfinder.com .   Bird info and pictures are updated on that site as  fast as we can.

A-Parrot's to A-Flamingo Rescue's  "Mission"

A-Parrot is dedicated to alleviating animal suffering, protecting the welfare of pet birds and parrots, and providing top quality care for the birds/parrots in our temporary possession.  We will then provide screened adoption services in locating new homes for these wonderful creatures.

A-Parrot's  goal is to be a model animal/bird welfare organization reflecting the values of our community by educating the public against abuse, cruelty and neglect of the avian species, and promoting the proper and humane care of birds/parrots through  compassionate care.  A-Parrot Rescue provides adoption to carefully screened and caring bird owners who fit our qualifications and who agree to follow A-Parrot's adoption policies. Our policies are in effect to protect the well being of all homeless parrots and birds released into our care.

Are you a  First-Time Bird Owner?

We will be glad to answer any questions a first-time bird owner may have in order  to make a valid decision if parrot/bird ownership is a viable prospect for one's lifestyle.   Our goal is to make sure the bird and the new Adopter are a match.

A-Parrot  encourages every person to  do their research on bird care  and parrot  species info BEFORE choosing a bird as a pet.  We discourage obtaining a pet bird (or any pet)  without  first finding out what quirks various species of parrots have.

A-Parrot suggests  that  every new potential bird owner first and foremost reads every bird care book and magazine they can find.  Libraries and the Internet contain a lot of info on bird species and bird care.

It is also important that everyone  makes sure the species of parrot they are considering would in all reality  be suitable for their home, apartment space, family, and lifestyle.

A-Parrot to A-Flamingo Rescue  sincerely feels that if all pet owners researched the pet they were interested in, then this would most certainly  alleviate the great number of birds (and other pets) that may have to be turned over to rescue organizations or shelters at a later date.  Hopefully some day, thru public awareness, our jobs as "animal rescuers"  will be lightened or phased out entirely.

Who we Adopt out Parrots to

A-Parrot to A-Flamingo can only adopt out our rescue parrots to experienced parrot owners. (Cockatiels, lovebirds, budgies are not considered large or small parrots.)  We will require proof of your parrot ownership if you are interested n adopting a parrot from us.

Example:  if you are interested in a Cockatoo, you must supply us with a copy of receipt as proof you own/owned a Cockatoo in the recent past.

Because of the long life span of most parrots, they will sometimes end up having 3-4 homes during their lives.   That is why A-Parrot needs "experienced" parrot owners to adopt our birds, who will not give up on the bird if it is not the perfect pet one expects.

However, it is mandatory to return the parrot to our organization (within one year of adoption) if one is unable to continue caring for it.  Our adoption contract is explained to you during your pre-determination email interviews and it is your choice whether you want to proceed.

Bird Care Training/Classes

Bird care classes for new bird owners are very helpful and informative,  but A-Parrot to A- Flamingo, Inc.  just does not have the time to do this training.  We recommend your contacting other organizations for this training.  Feel free to contact us after you obtain your first parrot from another source.

Veterinary Care

Per our adoption contract, you will need to get your parrot vet checked as soon as you get it home, unless the bird has already been vet checked prior to adoption.  You will need to locate an  AVIAN VETERINARIAN, not just a dog and cat vet, for your bird. Yes, birds will need vet care at some time, just like a cat or a dog.  Pet ownership is never cheap!

A-Parrot is a Registered "No Kill" Organization

We are a registered NO-KILL organizationA-Parrot makes every effort to  find homes for  older parrots and/or those that may have personality issues.

Would you like to Adopt a Parrot from our  Organization?

A-Parrot adopts out birds to the public, as long as the person fits our adoption qualifications and agrees to abide by A-Parrot's policies.

Our adoption qualifications and policies apply to everyone who contacts us.  Not everyone may actually qualify to adopt a parrot, though.

Cockatiels and smaller birds are  also available to most everyone.  An email interview  starts our adoption process no matter what species you are interested in.

Adoption applications are viewed by our Board of Directors who will make the final adoption approval decision.  Then it is just a matter of scheduling an appointment to visit the bird of your choice.  You must sign a detailed adoption contract (a legal document).

Our policies are in effect for the benefit of all the birds that have been released into our care.  Our policies are put in place to insure that all birds we get in find the same, or much better, homes than they came from.

Our Location

We are located in Brecksville, Ohio 44141 (close to Parma, Independence, Broadview Hts., Cleveland), close to the Ohio Turnpike 80/90, I-77,  and I-480.   Exact address will be given after your application has been approved and when an appointment has been made.

A-Parrot will accept birds from all over the U.S., but the owner must be able to bring the bird(s) to us in Brecksville, Ohio.  We are sorry but we have no one to help us with transport.

If you need to locate a home for your parrot, please do not try to offer us your ill parrot.   Also, if you are looking for medical advice, you have reached the wrong site.  Contact an avian veterinarian if your bird is sick.  We may have a vet referral for you.

The Personality of Parrots that We Get In:

A-Parrot will accept older, not tame, and some hard-to-place parrots. Of course, tame parrots are also welcome. We also take in cockatiels and smaller cage birds too.  All birds must be in good health and physical condition.

Basic Adoption Requirements

We are located in Ohio.  Adopters must LIVE in the State of Ohio, or close to its border (inquire), and will have to drive to see the bird here.    You must be 21 years of age or older.  Our rescue parrots will be older and "usually" are not suitable as pets for children -- or for people who are first-time parrot owners.

Proof of Parrot Ownership for Potential Adopters

Be prepared to send us a proof receipt that you own/owned a parrot recently (not necessarily the exact same species you are interested in adopting from us).  We believe parrots are happiest in "flocks" so multi-parrot owners are especially welcome to contact us to start their interview.  (We do not count ownership of a cockatiel  as a "parrot"  if you are actually  applying for a parrot.)

However, cockatiels and smaller birds are usually a lot easier to adopt from our organization.     More details are on our  ADOPT A BIRD page.

Guarantees on Adoptive Birds -- None

A-Parrot will only adopt out "visually healthy" birds.   We do not accept sick birds nor do we adopt out any bird showing suspicious "symptoms".  We do our best to adopt out well birds.  Adopters receive copies of any vet check receipts we have.

All adoptions are on an "as is" basis which includes both the internal health and personality of the birds we get in.  We will not guarantee that any bird will make a good subject for talking, trick training, or taking to nursing homes for visits either.  All info we know about the bird will be passed on to the potential Adopter for the Adopter to make the final decision if that bird is suited for him/her.

Donations for Adopting a Bird

A-Parrot to A-Flamingo Rescue needs to reiterate that there are expenses in owning or rescuing any animal.  Rescue organizations are not in existence to give out free or almost free pets to the public.  This seems to be  a common misconception when "some" people contact an animal rescue organization.

Please understand that doing bird rescue is expensive.  A-Parrot's birds need to be fed and cared for, vet checked if necessary -- may be on expensive diets, given treats, fresh fruits and veggies, etc.  There is upkeep for both the rescue organization -- and the Adopter -- in order to keep caring for any live creature on the long-term.

Donations vary per specific bird being adopted out.  This info is explained to you during your last pre-determination email.  Cages for parrots will go with the bird.

Voluntary Donations

A-Parrot to A-Flamingo, Inc., Parrot Rescue is in need of any brand of seed, pellets, cuttlebone, and millet spray.  We are registered in the State of Ohio as a nonprofit organization, but  we are not a  501C3.  Therefore, we get no outside or governmental funding or grants.  We do not do fund-raising.  Our staff are all volunteers, not salaried personnel.  We do not pay medical or personal benefits for our volunteers.  Our policy is to keep working expenses  at a mimimum in order to make sure we have the funds to keep feeding and caring for the present and future birds we may get in to re-home.

Your consideration of a monetary gift to our organization first and foremost will pay for feeding the rescue birds in our care.   To be able to keep purchasing food for our birds is A-Parrot's primary goal and concern.

Thank your for your consideration in this regard!  Laughing

THE STATUS OF THE BIRD PLACEMENT PROGRAM (BPP), MEDINA, OHIO

CLOSED AS OF JUNE, 2007

The predecessor to A-Parrot to A-Flamingo Rescue, The Bird Placement Program, is now closed due to the passing of Dottie Schira, the Director of BPP, on June 5, 2007. Dottie and I worked together at BPP  for over 20 years. She was a good friend and we will all miss her dearly.  It was her choice that BPP closes at her passing.  Bird Placement Program has NOT been transferred  to any family member (i.e., daughter Amber Schira) or any other  person.  Nonprofit organizations cannot be transferred to family members as they are not family-owned businesses.    (See the IRS for other nonprofit organization rules.)

Dottie's  BPP website  (20+ pages) is now off the Internet.  Any old BPP links now go to  a blank page. Some dishonest people "may" be claiming to "rescue" birds for BPP.  Please be aware that this may be fraudulent, and your "donation"  to BPP will not actually be be going to  BPP any more.

To clarify, if anyone wishes to  privately purchase any parrots from Dottie's daughter Amber or anyone else, please feel free to do so.  I have merely tried to clear up some misunderstandings circulating now about the status of the (now closed) Bird Placement Program.
