A Safe Haven for Parrots and Other Pet Birds  -       Re-Homing Agency -"No Kill" Policy - Bird Adoption to Adults - Professional Screening of Applicants - Caring Team of Pet Bird Specialists  - Donations

WELCOME!   Thank you for visiting our parrot adoption and re-homing site!

We are located in northern Ohio.    A-Parrot to A-Flamingo Rescue is now looking for people  who are serious about adopting a "second-hand" parrot or small pet bird.  We have several that are currently in need and waiting for a new home.   We would like to meet you via email!

INTRO

You have reached a not-for-profit parrot re-homing organization.  We are not a "bird seller.  We adopt out birds to people who clear our adoption process.  A-Parrot Rescue  is always looking for just the right home home for each and every bird released into our care.

We adopt out to Ohio area residents, or those living in States close to Ohio.  Inquire.  We do not ship.

Please take the time to read over the info on this website if you are sincerely interested in donating -- or adopting -- a bird from  A-Parrot to A-Flamingo Rescue.   Keep in mind that  A-Parrot's policies are in effect totally for the benefit of the birds released into our care.

WHO WE ARE

A-Parrot to A-Flamingo, Inc., Parrot Rescue now takes the place of The Bird Placement Program.  BPP is closed as of June 2007.  Our rescue team has been (and is continuing to find)  new homes for unwanted birds for almost 25 years.  The only changes are a new name and new Management.  A-Parrot to A-Flamingo Rescue will take in parrots and pet cage birds in need of a new home.  Our rescue professionals work diligently to find just the right new home for any bird released to our temporary care.

ABOUT A-PARROT TO A-FLAMINGO RESCUE:

   (1)   A-Parrot to A-Flamingo is a bird placement and re-homing agency, not a  sanctuary.  We function as the "safe haven" prior to locating that great home for any bird turned over to us.

 (2)  A-Parrot to A-Flamingo Rescue does detailed screening of qualified parrot owners for the placement of parrots.  Post-adoption home checks require our adopters to live close to Ohio.

 (3)  We do not warehouse parrots in outside buildings or garages  (as some sanctuaries do) with little human contact or attention.  A-Parrot to A-Flamingo's birds are temporarily fostered in private homes in the Ohio area with current parrot owners (a home  "flock") prior to their placement.

 (4) Drop-off and pick up of birds is in Brecksville, Ohio.  Our rescue organization is run out of our home.   Since our rescues are fostered here in private homes in our area, we are not set up for visiting until an Adopter's application has been approved by our Board of Directors first.

  (5)  A-Parrot to A-Flamingo  also accepts most problem birds so we are looking for experienced parrot owners to adopt our parrots to, someone who understands parrot "issues or quirks".   Tame birds come in occasionally too.

  (6)  Our adoption process starts with an email "chat" to get to know you and your birds first (this is not our actual application).  We explain our adoption policies further at this time too.

  (7) We do not interview in person or over the phone as we prefer to put our policies in writing rather than verbally explaining them to you.  Our adoption qualifications and policies apply to all applicants equally.  Our interview will explain further.

 (8)  Potential clients who are considering dropping off their bird, please click onto the top sidebar DONATING A BIRD  for details.

OUR "MISSION"

A-Parrot to A-Flamingo Rescue is dedicated to alleviating parrot neglect and  suffering, offering advice to bird owners to assist them in creating a good environment for their pet bird.  We provide a  safe haven with top quality care for the birds/parrots released into our care prior to our locating good homes for them. Potential adopters are carefully screened.

A-Parrot's  goal is to be a model animal/bird welfare organization reflecting the values of our community by educating the public against abuse, cruelty and neglect of the avian species, and promoting the proper and humane care pet birds.

A-Parrot to A-Flamingo Rescue  sincerely feels that if all pet owners researched the pet they were interested in, then this would most certainly alleviate the great number of birds (and other pets) that may have to be turned over to rescue organizations or shelters at a later date.  Hopefully some day, thru public awareness, our jobs as "animal rescuers"  will be lightened or phased out entirely.

PARROT/BIRD SPECIES WE WILL ACCEPT FOR PLACEMENT:

A-Parrot will take in  "finches to macaws -- plus flamingos".   Laughing   Large and small parrots (greys, cockatoos, amazons, eclectus, etc.), conures, ringneck parrots, specialized parakeets species, cockatiels, budgies, finches, canaries, etc.    Flamingos?   We will also gladly accept  "unwanted"  pink plastic garden flamingos -- to add to the flock in our yard.

                                    ..............

WE DO NOT TAKE IN:   Wild or outside birds, farm birds, game birds, swans, peacocks, toucans, lories, doves, or pigeons.

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN ADOPTING A RESCUE BIRD?

Multi-pet and multi-bird owners are welcome to apply to adopt a bird from  A-Parrot to A-Flamingo Rescue.  All applications must be reviewed by our Board of Directors, and final approval is up to them.   Click onto the top sidebars  ADOPTING A BIRD and RESCUE HINTS for more information.

DO YOU HAVE A PROOF RECEIPT THAT YOU OWN/OWNED A PARROT?

Since this is the Internet and we do not know you personally, A-Parrot to A-Flamingo requires proof that our Adopters own/owned a parrot in the recent past.  This applies to large and small parrots.  Since parrots live so long, they usually end up having 3-4 or more... homes during their lives.  A-Parrot prefers to adopt out to people who are honestly familiar with the species they are interested in, and one who will not give up on the parrot "if" it does not turn out to be the perfect pet one expects.

Some Common Sense Information

No matter how cute birds look on Animal Planet programs, older parrots "may" come with some quirks the new owner will have to work thru.  Birds will need time to adjust to their new home, new family, cage location, etc.  You will need to have patience to be able to adjust to your new pet.

And -- not all parrots will talk.  Everyone seems to want a talking bird.  This we cannot guarantee for you, although we will give you the info we know about the bird to help you decide if this is the pet for you.

ADOPTERS:

See sidebar ADOPTING A BIRDBe  sure to read all of the info detailed on this site.

Our adoption qualifications apply to all applicants.  Not everyone may qualify to adopt a parrot from our organization. We hope you qualify!  A-Parrot's Board of Directors makes all final adoption decisions.  Our policies are subject to change at any time.

**Cockatiels and smaller birds are  available to most everyone.  An email "chat" still starts our adoption process no matter what species you are interested in.

FIRST TIME PARROT OWNERS:

A-Parrot to A-Flamingo  encourages every person to  do their research on bird care  and parrot  species info BEFORE choosing a bird as a pet.  Please do not obtain a bird (or any pet)  without  first finding out more about their quirks and care.    It is also important that everyone  makes sure the species of parrot they are considering would in all reality be suitable for their home, apartment space, family, and lifestyle.

QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE ABOUT OUR ORGANIZATION .....

HOW MANY  BIRDS DO WE HAVE?

It varies, as birds come in and go out all the time.  We only accept the number of birds that the Management and our Volunteers can properly care for prior to placement.  Our holding space is often temporarily full.  Some birds we have may not be listed yet also.  Inquire.

DO WE SHIP OR ALLOW VISITORS?

A-Parrot to A-Flamingo does NOT ship birds, nor do we meet you part way.  We run A-Parrot out of a private home and are not set up for general "visiting" of our birds prior to applications being approved by our Board of Directors.

INFO AND PICTURES OF BIRDS AVAILABLE

Some pictures are noted here on our PHOTO page. More current info and pictures of available birds are shown on our site on Petfinder.com .  The Petfinder site is updated as  fast as we can.  This list may change on a daily basis.

 See:   http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/OH662.html

BIRD CARE CLASSES

Bird care classes for new bird owners are very helpful and informative, but A-Parrot to A- Flamingo just does not have the time to do this training ourselves.  We recommend that all new bird owners first contact other bird rescue organizations for this training.  Feel free to apply to  A-Parrot to A- Flamingo after you obtain your first parrot from another source.

POST-ADOPTION VET CHECKS

It is important  that you locate a certified  AVIAN VETERINARIAN, not just a dog and cat vet, for your bird. A-Parrot to A-Flamingo does not give out veterinary advice, but may be able to supply you with a list of avian vets.

AFTER AN APPLICATION HAS BEEN APPROVED

After one's application clears, A-Parrot to A-Flamingo needs to meet the actual Adopter here in Brecksville when you come to see the bird.   You must be 21 years of age or older.  We do not allow breeding of any rescue bird one obtains from our organization. Bands are NOT to be removed from any bird's leg.

GUARANTEES

A-Parrot to A-Flamingo tries to adopt out "visually healthy" birds.  Adopters receive copies of any vet check receipts we have. All adoptions are on an "as is" basis which includes both the internal health and personality of the birds we get in.  We will not guarantee that our parrots will never bite, that they will make a good subject for talking, trick training, or be calm enough for taking to nursing homes.

You will receive all the personality info we know about the bird. Our Adopters may need to have an open mind if they wish to consider a "second hand" bird.

FREE BIRDS?

Our organization survives on sporadic donations from the public.  Rescuing and caring for any animal is expensive.  A-Parrot's birds may be on expensive diets, need seed, pellets, fresh fruits and veggies, etc.  so your consideration of a donation is imperative.

With all due respect, please do not contact A-Parrot to A-Flamingo soliciting for a "free or almost free parrot because you are disabled or on a fixed income but you promise to love, care, cherish, and take great care of a parrot."  We hear that all the time.   A-Parrot runs their rescue organization on a sub-fixed income.  Parrot ownership can be expensive.   Can you afford this expense?

A-Parrot understands that money is tight for all of us right now  ....  and this is especially true for anyone who runs an organization involving live animals.  A-Parrot needs to consider logically if we are able to financially feed and care for each bird waiting for its new home also. We also reserve the right to turn down any bird offered to us.

A-Parrot is a little direct in our explanations about our rescue policies.

Our policies are in effect:  (1) For the benefit of each bird available for placement.  (2) To insure that all birds we get in find the same, or much better, homes than they came from.  (3) To protect the well being of all homeless parrots and birds released into our care. See the sidebar ADOPTING A BIRD for more info.

OUR STATUS

Referring again to A-Parrot to A-Flamingo's sub-fixed income -- we need to clarify that we get no outside or governmental funding or grants.  We do not do fund-raising.   Our birds are fostered in private homes.   Our expenses are kept at a minimum -- so that any gift/donation to A-Parrot goes direct to care for our rescues, primarily to purchase food items for our birds.

A-Parrot to A-Flamingo's policy is to keep our working expenses low. We are not listed in any city phone book.  We do not spend any money advertising locally in newspapers, we do not solicit for pay ads on our website, we do not put out money jars anywhere, we do not go to bird shows, nor are we looking for any parrots for our personal ownership.

Therefore, we must depend on private support for drop off of birds and for adopting a bird from our organization.  Your consideration of this fact is much appreciated.  Money is necessary to allow us to feed and care for the present and future birds we may get in to re-home.   Thank you in advance!  End of commercial......Smile

Please see the sidebar YOU CAN HELP for more info. in this regard.

REFERRALS AND OUR CLIENTS

A-Parrot Rescue is priviledged to receive lots of referrals from previous clients, avian vets, other bird owners who can attest to our sincerity in finding just the right home for any bird released to our care.

FOR THOSE NEEDING TO PLACE THEIR PARROTS/BIRDS:

SOME CAUTIONS IN DEALING WITH AN INTERNET "BIRD RESCUE" PERSON:

Caution:  Some internet sites are now calling themselves a "parrot rescue organization" in order to obtain free parrots for themselves for personal ownership, distribution to their friends, breeding, or re-selling.

Some "red flags" to watch out for:

If the "rescue" only wants large parrots, and makes excuses not to take in certain little birds.

They have an adoption form but do not confirm with the applicant promptly whether or not one has been "accepted" to adopt a parrot from them.

If they have a form to fill in, but claim they are not accepting applications at this time--but are still advertising that they are looking for macaws or other large parrots.

If the person prefers to pick up the bird in person.

The person cannot supply you with a  written reference from a legitimate previous client.

                      * * * * * * * * * * * * *

There are also a lot of private people "bird begging" in Internet forum groups now too.

                       * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Of course, if you don't want your pet and really do not care about WHO ends up with it, then that is up to you too.

A caring parrot owner will always check out who they are dealing with first -- before turning over their pet to a stranger. Most rescue organizations listed on Petfinder.com are recommended to deal with.  Reputable placement organizations will be happy to supply references.  Written references from an organization's previous clients are always best.

THE BIRD PLACEMENT PROGRAM HAS CLOSED

Effective June 2007, the Bird Placement Program, Medina, Ohio has  closed down due to the passing of its Director, Dottie Schira. It was Dottie's personal wish that BPP and all of her other animal rescue sites, closes down at her passing.

The old Bird Placement Program website  (20+ pages) is now off the Internet and its domain name has been bought by another company Some old website pages may still show up, but all Bird Placement Program "links" go nowhere.  If any person or organization still has  BPP as a link on their webpage, you might want to remove it.

After June 2007, anyone who may be claiming to "rescue" birds for BPP, using paperwork with BPP's name on it, or soliciting for donations for BPP, is a fraud.

This note has been added to A-Parrot to A-Flamingo's site to clear up a few misunderstandings circulating on the Internet at this time.
